Comprised of both software and engineering components, a new, cost-effective slotting solution has been introduced by TZA Consulting (Booth 4449), a best practices logistics consulting company. The new offering generates increased capacity and throughput in existing facilities, as well as maximized material flow and use of space, increase productivity and enhanced quality on a consistent and repeatable basis, said Paul Schweet, senior vice president of TZA Consulting.
“The biggest obstacle for slotting solutions is the entry point and then the return on investment,” Schweet added. “This solution eradicates those issues and makes it very easy to cost justify, enabling our customers to realize the benefits.”
The slotting solution uses a cost-based evaluation model to calculate tradeoffs between square footage, replenishment costs and picking productivity. For clear visual representation of SKU movement within a facility, it incorporates AutoCad three-dimensional graphic rendering. This model also enables easy evaluation of alternative options and scenarios during the planning and design phases.
“To ensure the success of any slotting initiative, upfront engineering is critical,” Schweet added. “We define each individual company’s variable needs and business rules to achieve optimal results.”
An ideal candidate facility is one with 5,000-plus SKUs managing multiple pick zones and methodologies. The slotting methodology can be applied as either a constrained analysis of an existing facility, or as an unconstrained analysis of a new operation during the planning and design phases. It is particularly effective for companies with seasonal inventories or promotional programs that affect inventory volumes.
Rapid deployment is offered, with new projects rolling out in three to five weeks. Most users can expect to see 6 to 10% improvement in affected areas, with an overall facility increase in throughput capacity due to better asset leveraging, Schweet concluded.
