Racks get cushy job

Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 10/2/2001

A large distributor of foam cushioning products for the recreational vehicle industry needed a better way to handle these items. The cushion material is inherently bulky and pliable, so it's difficult to palletize. And it's next to impossible to stack.

With these handling problems, the distributor found that its receiving and shipping labor costs were unpredictable. And growing.

But after checking with a manufacturer of stackable racks, the distributor found the solution to its handling needs. The distributor chose a stackable rack designed to hold large quantities of its foam products throughout the delivery network. Forklifts move the stackable racks on to and off of trucks. At the end of their journey, the racks are returned to the distributor.

As a result, the costs in time, labor, and storage for loading/unloading of these foam cushioning products for both the distributor and its customers were dramatically reduced.
