Radio Frequency Identification

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 6/1/2007

Analysts expect RFID sales to reach $5 billion this year. This includes all applications of active and passive RFID—from automobile ignition systems and access keys for office buildings to programs for tracking goods in the supply chain. RFID tags and other transponders make up the largest segment of RFID sales, while software is just a blip on the radar. Supply chain management applications of RFID represent about 9% of today's RFID market, and that portion is expected to grow to 19% by 2011. Thanks to mandates from retailers such as METRO and Wal-Mart, most of the current and projected supply chain management activity is related to consumer packaged goods.
