Liberty Bell moves to a new home

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 11/1/2003

In the past few decades, Philadelphia's Liberty Bell has been moved four times. The most recent move was October 9th when the bell was transferred from the Liberty Bell Pavilion to a new exhibit hall next door called the Liberty Bell Center. There the bell will be better preserved and also protected by bullet-resistant glass.

Moving the 2,080-pound bell 937 feet was no small feat. The move required a steel cart with 14-inch pneumatic dual wheel casters donated by Albion Inc.

During a test run, calibration devices attached to weights acting as the bell showed that the bell vibrated less when riding on the wheeled cart than when the cart was lifted and carried by a fork truck.

As a result, the rigging company handling the project, George Young Co., decided to primarily use the steel cart with Hyster fork trucks serving as back-up equipment. Other devices used to lift, position and install the bell included a hydraulic gantry, trolley and a chain hoist.
