Materials handling: CHEP pallets receive FM Global product listing
Product listing satisfies new NFPA model sprinkler code requirements.

CHEP, a pallet and container pooling services provider, announced it has received an important product listing for its four-way entry wood pallets with composite wood blocks. Factory Mutual (FM) Global, an international property insurer, now lists CHEP pallets as meeting the requirements of its standard “Classification of Idle Plastic Pallets as Equivalent to Wood Pallets (FM 4996).”
“We are pleased to receive this important product designation from one of the world’s most respected test laboratories,” said Kevin Shuba, group president for CHEP Americas. “The FM Global product listing reaffirms that our four-way entry wood pallets with composite wood blocks meet the requirements of existing fire safety codes.” Until recently, wood pallets with composite blocks were not required to be listed as meeting a product standard, as they were previously defined as being wooden products. Due to new requirements in the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 2007 edition of its model code “Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems” (NFPA 13-2007), wood pallets with composite wood blocks are now subject to a product standard previously only applicable to plastic pallets. The FM Global product listing meets the requirements of the new language in NFPA 13-2007, and effectively validates that no upgrade in sprinkler protection is required in manufacturing and shipping facilities solely as a result of the use of CHEP’s pallets.
