A new era

By Ray Kulwiec -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/1999

Next month Modern Materials Handling will have a new look. It will be obvious throughout all the pages of the magazine. Type, graphics, layout, and style. As we approach the new millennium, it will be MMH's way of saying, "Welcome to the future of materials handling."

I think you will find the new crisp, concise format informative and reader friendly. The ongoing goal is to reduce the complexities to useful and practical information you can use to do your job better. And you'll see a stronger tie-in than ever to our electronic magazine counterpart, MMH Online. The print and electronic versions of the magazine will continue working together as a closely knit team.

On a personal note, the new look will coincide with a big change for me. I will no longer serve as editor-in-chief of Modern Materials Handling, a position I have enjoyed holding for close to 15 years. Prior to that, I covered the field for 11 years for Plant Engineering Magazine. And I also was privileged to serve as editor-in-chief of the Materials Handling Handbook, published by John Wiley & Sons. I even worked on materials handling improvement projects as a young engineer (back in the dark ages).

Two stints (20 years apart) on the board of directors of the Materials Handling & Management Society, and a term on the College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education, sponsored by the Material Handling Industry, helped shape my appreciation for the work that groups such as these do in providing information and education on materials handling throughout industry and academia. I hope some of you have been able to take advantage of the resources these organizations have to offer.

Obviously my commitment to materials handling goes back many years. It has been a rewarding experience, and one that I hope will continue in the future. I have enjoyed hearing from many of you in the past, and getting your ideas and reactions. I can only say that for me, it's been a great time.
