Voxware introduces voice-enabled browser for Windows CE-based devices

With the introduction of VoxBrowser, a voice-enabled XML browser, Voxware, Inc. (609-514-4100) is attempting to change the dynamics of the market for voice-driven logistics solutions.
The voice-enabled browser allows end-users, including a CIO or logistics industry solution provider, to create their own voice-driven logistics solutions without relying on proprietary voice-input hardware from a specific vendor.
In short, it’s now about the software, not the hardware.
“Over the past 12 to 15 months, the voice technology has moved from the missionary phase to a best practice in logistics,” says Tom Drury, CEO. “That’s an important basic event. The question for us was: how can we enable more customers to take advantage of this technology more quickly.”
Voxware’s new browser combines a thin-client solution built on open systems and a web-centric, standards-based platform with an embedded speech recognition engine designed for high-noise industrial environments.
The browser can be deployed on any Windows CE device, including ruggedized hand-held computers and CE-based scanners, currently being used in a warehouse, regardless of the manufacturer. “All CE-based devices have audio capability, even if they’re not currently being used for voice solutions,” Drury adds. “Now, instead of having a keyboard input and screen display, an end user can have the look and feel of Internet Explorer but with voice input and audio output.”
According to Drury, the move away from proprietary solutions to an open standard mirrors what happened with other technologies as they matured beyond the early adoption stage, including RF-enabled bar code scanning and communications solutions and automatic guided vehicles (AGV).
“We’re taking away the product dependency and putting the power of the solution into the hands of the end user,” says Drury.
