Getting on track with monorails
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/1998
Considering the use of an automated electrified monorail (AEM) system for your plant or warehouse? Material Handling Industry's product section for AEMs has just produced a 15-page publication, "Guidelines for Specifying...Automated Electrified Monorail Systems."Included are 15 illustrations, such as the one here, to help you understand the technology and its design, planning, and implementation in appropriate applications.
Unlike traditional monorail, where trolleys travel a fixed path, AEM systems have independently motorized trolleys running only as needed and at various speeds. For rapid delivery, speeds to 600 ft/minute are possible. For flexibility, AEMs can route deliveries to specific locations as needed. In the plant environment an AEM enables the user to shift from producing one part to another in minutes and to balance work flow.
Both suspended and "inverted" AEMs are covered, terms are defined, and details given on track switches, vertical drop or lift sections, and more.
