Avery Dennison founder dies

R. Stanton Avery, founder and chairman emeritus of Avery Dennison Corp., died on December 12, 1997 of a stroke at age 90. Stan Avery was a highly successful entrepreneur, as well as a philanthropist and civic leader.In 1935, Avery invented a product he called Kum Kleen price stickers, the first commercially feasible self-adhesive labels. His invention led to Kum Kleen Adhesive Product Co., later known as Avery Dennison Corp.
As the business grew, Avery invented a number of machines and processes that are still in use at the company and in the industry today. He developed the first die-cutting method for manufacturing self-adhesive labels, and was awarded a number of patents for his accomplishments. In 1996, Avery Dennison had sales of $3.2 billion and 16,100 employees in 37 countries.
