AMHERST, N.Y.-For some $16.5 million, Columbus McKinnon, headquartered here, has purchased all of the outstanding stock of Univeyor A/S, a leading European supplier of turnkey integrated materials handling systems.Based in Arden, Denmark, Univeyor designs, develops, manufactures, and implements its systems for varied industries. Customers include Volvo, United Biscuits, Chivas Regal, Mars, Sony, Saab-Scania, and British Telecom.
With some 200 employees, Univeyor was one of the first companies within its industry to acquire ISO-9000 certification. Univeyor has specialized in systems that combine production, storage, and distribution functions together into a complete technical solution. Large systems have involved robotics, automatic guided vehicles, or crane systems. Roller, chain, belt, and vertical conveyors along with palletizing equipment are also among Univeyor-manufactured products.
"The acquisition of Univeyor signifies our continued commitment to a growth strategy focused on adding new products that leverage our existing dominant market share, seeking growth opportunities through synergistic, non-dilutive acquisitions, and increasing our international market penetration and presence," says Herb Ladds, president and CEO of Columbus McKinnon (CM).
"For some time," adds Tim Tevens, vice president and COO, "CM has been developing an expertise in materials handling solutions which focus on individual work stations. The addition of Univeyor will propel CM to the next level of involvement where we will be able to offer materials handling design and implementation services for an entire facility. This movement to provide integrated solutions is in keeping with the general industry trend to outsource internal work flow and materials handling engineering tasks."
CM is a broad-line designer, manufacturer, and supplier of materials handling products and integrated systems. CM's chain and wire rope hoists, steel chain, lift tables, and other products are sold in the U.S. and abroad.
With CM's backing, Univeyor is expected to expand its presence in the U.S., European, and other markets. Target industries include auto, food/beverage, storage/distribution, electronics, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, heavy manufacturing, and metals.
