Manufacturing managers upbeat on '98 prospects

Senior and mid-level decision makers in U.S. manufacturing are optimistic about prospects for their businesses in 1998, according to the latest results from the Cahners Business Confidence Index (CBCI) survey. Managers expect to produce more goods and hire more workers, for example.The most upbeat outlook comes from businesses based in the West and Northeast. And by industry category, those companies making products for construction and electronics/computers lead the gains, evincing more optimism than consumer goods and general equipment manufacturers. Overall, the CBCI results put the outlook about where it was last Spring (chart).
