If you're a manager in wholesale distribution, meanwhile, then here's a new book worth examining: "Activity-Based Management in Wholesale Distribution: Winning the Profitability Battle." The book results from work by Arthur Andersen (AA) partners together with a new arm of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW).
Trends to fee-for-service pricing and to evolving integrated supply relationships point up the need for good management information, including knowing the underlying cost structure, says AA partner Patrick Dolan.
"Activity-based management (ABM) is a way of looking at a business from the operational viewpoint," adds book coauthor Steve Player, an AA partner. The ABM approach helps identify and understand the true drivers of profitability, he explains.
