More robots for materials handling

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/1998

Robots do far more than just auto assembly jobs, such as welding. Materials handling tasks done by robots helped rack up the record year just completed by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA).

Material handling applications continue to lead the way, says Donald A. Vincent, RIA executive vp. Robot makers are much less dependent on the auto industry.

"Material handling applications, such as parts transfer, machine tending, packaging, and palletizing cut across many industries" says Vincent. "Manufacturers of consumer goods, electronics, food and beverages, and other non-automotive products are now taking advantage of robots to become stronger global competitors. Small, medium, and large companies in just about every industry are taking a fresh look at robots to see how this technology can help them solve manufacturing challenges."

RIA has two new resources: The videotape, "A Guide to Robot Solutions" is available, along with the "1998 Robotics Industry Directory" with detailed information on more than 125 leading suppliers. Call 734-994-6088 or go to www.robotics.org for more information.
