Intermec Technologies Corp.'s parent company, UNOVA, Inc., has signed a letter of intent with Amtech Corp. to purchase the latter's high-frequency RFID (radio frequency identification) business unit known as the Transportation Systems Group (TSG).TSG is a leading supplier of RFID for electronic toll collection, rail and motor fleet tracking, and access control to parking and other structures. TSG's revenues in 1997 were about $52 million.
The acquisition, says UNOVA chairman and CEO Alton J. Brann, "is an important step in our strategy to establish our Intermec division as a leader in the fast-growing RFID industry."
Earlier, UNOVA acquired from IBM "what we believe to be the leading semiconductor technology for RFID," adds Brann. "Intermec will utilize TSG's large group of experienced engineers to speed up the development of both RFID tags and equipment for applications in the industrial, warehouse, distribution, retail, and government markets," he continues.
Two members have been added to the top of the management team at Diamond Phoenix; they are Thomas F. Coyne, CEO, and Larry Strayhorn, president. Both execs were, at one point, with Rapistan Systems.
Strayhorn suggests that, "in addition to a sharp focus on customer service, Diamond Phoenix will have more of an emphasis on full case handling and broken case picking systems."
The company expects "to work closely with leading systems integrators such as Rapistan and HK Systems to deliver systems that meet the needs of the changing supply chain," he adds.
"We expect this strategy will allow us to double Diamond Phoenix' sales for the company in the next two years," says Coyne. Current annual sales are in the $15 million to $17 million range, he adds.
