Survey: PCs to control more processes
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 6/1/1998
Here's more evidence of the emergence of the PC to control processes; it comes from a new study, "The Future of Industrial Machine Control in Factory Automation." Industrial Controls Consulting surveyed 343 top execs in this technical arena last year, then compared their answers in 1997 to those in a similar study in 1993.These pie charts report one survey finding.
Separately, the survey looked at the respondents' predictions for the types of controls on machines in the year 2007. Programmable logic controllers will continue to be the top choice of users, but market share will fall from 60% now to just under 40% in 2007. PC controls will zoom up from 8% now to nearly 30%, while motion controllers gain slightly and CNC devices fall some over the period.
