By Mike Flamer -- Modern Materials Handling, 6/1/1998
Editor's note: Mike Flamer, MHMS president, reflects on the recent NA 98 event. Upon returning from the North American Material Handling Show in Detroit, it became clear to me that the materials handling industry continues to grow and diversify. New products and technology continue to proliferate along with more companies calling themselves systems integrators."Systems integration" is a buzzword that has been used for many years in the material handling industry. But, with the advent of high-speed sortation, pick-to-light systems, carousels, AS/RS, bar codes, RF, high-reach trucks, high-density storage, and fast palletization, companies demand that they deal with professionals who know how all of this technology works together.
That's where the Material Handling & Management Society (MHMS) can help. Members of the Society are taking advantage of the wide variety of educational and training materials as well as study courses to update their knowledge and expertise about a wide variety of products and applications. Some of these materials include online technology papers, in-home study courses using CD-ROM technology, a large resource library administered by the Material Handling Institute, and, of course, the four Correspondence Courses dealing with materials handling basics, material management, and materials handling engineering.
Local MHMS chapters offer seminars, technical presentations, and tours to local sites that can increase your knowledge of the profession. MHMS members also receive discounts to the educational forums at the industry's two major trade shows, in Chicago and in Detroit.
This is the wrong time to be sitting on your laurels. The industry is changing and your needs are changing with it. MHMS members have the advantage. They know that the time they invest in learning about new technologies and systems will be paid back in future success and increased earnings.
