Are you a "sinner?"
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 6/1/1998
No, we're not discussing religion in this space. Rather, the focus is on managers and their "sins." Specifically, business professor John W. Collis in his new book, "The Seven Fatal Management Sins: Understanding and Avoiding Managerial Malpractice," explores what these sins are and how to avoid them.According to Collis, dean of the College of Business, St. Ambrose University, the sins are: (1) The character flaw; erosion of trust and integrity. (2) Blind ambition; focusing more on one's own career than managing the organization. (3) "Short-term scare mentality"-managing for survival with the simplistic fix. (4) Indecisiveness; unclear on when and who decides. (5) Blurred focus; the fuzzy vision. (6) Employees seen as an expense, not an investment. (7) Managing unchecked; the lack of accountability.
