Forklift bargains-buyer beware!

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 7/1/1998

Buyer beware-that's probably true if you're tempted to kick the tires on a "mint condition" forklift built 30 or 40 years ago that's now government surplus and offered by a salvage operation at a great, low price. That old forklift may be anything but a bargain. Even at an initial cost of $2,000 to $3,000 for one of these lift trucks, you just might wind up with a souvenir from an old U.S. Army base, not a working or even repairable vehicle.

Demilitarization of U.S. bases and cutbacks at federally-funded facilities have produced these "bargains." But lift truck dealers caution that they often can't easily fix and get these forklifts functioning again. Tilt cylinders, for example, may be rusted out and not easily repairable.
