Saul Goldweitz, a past chairman of Cahners Publishing Company and an early editor of Modern Materials Handling magazine, died July 3rd. He was 77 years old, and had retired in 1989.Born in 1920 in New York City, Goldweitz was awarded an MBA from Harvard at the age of 21 after graduating two years earlier from College of the City of New York at the top of his class.
Fresh from service as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Goldweitz joined Norman Cahners, founder of the publishing firm, as second in command and editor of this magazine early in 1946. Goldweitz continued as editor until 1947, when he became director of the company's laboratory division.
Among his contributions to materials handling, Goldweitz wrote the "Pallet Pattern Selection Guide" in the Palletizer, the predecessor to this magazine, and several chapters in the "Materials Handling Manual."
In 1949 Goldweitz was named vice president and treasurer of the company; in 1958 he became executive vice president, in 1965 he was named president, and in 1985, chairman.
Goldweitz leaves four children, two sons and two daughters, including Julie Goldweitz, his youngest child, who serves as corporate counsel for Reed Elsevier Inc.
