SUWANEE, GA.-At a dealer meeting held here Daewoo Heavy Industries America Corp. displayed eleven models from the company's redesigned lines of lift trucks for the first time. Dealers-together with members of the business press-learned about the trucks' new features at product seminars. And Daewoo unveiled its parts distribution center here, a new 172,000 sq ft facility.G5 Series. Toward one end of the range of new Daewoo lift trucks coming to users is the G5 Series of internal combustion vehicles. They are powered by gasoline, propane, or diesel engines, depending upon model. Designed to lift loads varying from 4,000 to 6,000 lb, G5 forklifts are available as cushion or pneumatic tire models. As a class of trucks, the company's G5 counterbalanced models aim at applications covering some 60% or more of the North American market.
Emerging from the "facelift" given to predecessor trucks in Daewoo's lines in this range are G5 models that show contemporary styling, and enhanced ergonomic features in keeping with requests for changes coming from those who operate the vehicles day-in, day-out in plants and warehouses, Daewoo execs say. And from the demands of operators' supervisors who realize that comfortable workers tend to be more productive.
The GC25S propane-powered model (shown) is compact but heavy duty, designed to lift loads to 5,000 lb at high performance levels. Floor pedals are positioned to reduce fatigue as are the hydraulic control levers. A low-effort tilt steering column adjusts easily to the individual driver's size. And a suspension seat is standard with hip restraints, seat belt, and lumbar support.
For high-lift loading/unloading an overhead guard gives good visibility for greater safety. In the GC25S model a Hercules 2.7 liter, 4-cylinder, overhead valve engine (gasoline or propane) provides high torque at low speeds for greater productivity in ramp loading situations and where high hydraulic flow is required. Power shift transmission and power steering are standard. In diesel powered G5 forklifts, a Daewoo 3.3 liter engine has an automatic glow-plug system for easy cold starts.
Heavy-duty D Series trucks. For applications where loads range from 22,500 to 33,000 lb, Daewoo's line now includes the D100/120/150 diesel-powered lift trucks. The rugged front end on these pneumatic-tired trucks has a standard shaft-type carriage designed for handling wide, heavy loads.
Shown is the D150 truck which also incorporates the ergonomics of the smaller gasoline-powered models. On the six-cylinder, direct injection diesel model the three-speed power transmission lets operators use full engine rpm. Steering is fully hydrostatic and braking is by full air-actuated S-cam brakes on a planetary drive axle. Light-touch hydraulic controls are among the truck's features
Other trucks not discussed here include a compact G3 Series of IC vehicles as well as a family of 3-wheel electrics, the T3 Series.
