Robot shipments slip
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 8/1/1998
Many areas where robots are applied-including end users performing materials handling and coating operations-continue to post healthy gains in the numbers for North American robotics companies. But both shipments and new orders are down in this year's first quarter statistics from the Robotic Industries Association (RIA)."The sluggish start to the year is disappointing, but not surprising," says RIA executive vp Donald Vincent. "We've had a terrific surge in the past five years, with shipments up 172% and new orders up 131%. We knew that the pace would slow at some point, and expect growth to resume soon.''
