AS/RS and AGVs statistics spotlighted at conference
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/1998
Recently, the ASRS/-AGVS Users Association held its Annual Conference at the Marriott City Center in Charlotte, N.C. Among the approximately 100 in attendance who participated in both informative sessions and plant tours of two area facilities, 60% represented system users and 40% were from vendors.During the formal presentations during the Conference, Dick Ward, executive vice president and general manager of the Material Handling Institute, noted that new AS/RS installations numbered 61 in 1997, with 46% of these installations purchased by new users of this technology. Smaller end users also had a significant share of the AS/RS systems installed: 45% of these installations were for companies not in either the Fortune 100 or 500 categories. Another trend to note is that manufacturing applications-at a 78% share of all installations-predominated compared to warehousing or other uses.
Turning to statistics on AGVS installations, Ward also commented that among the 65 new installations of AGVS in 1997, the vast majority (91%) were non-wire installations.
In applications for AGVS, however, a much smaller share (26%) of installations were for companies not in either the Fortune 100 or 500 categories, as compared to AS/RS. Manufacturing applications predominated, racking up 94% of all AGV systems. Average vehicles per system was 5.2.
Users remarked that, over the years, information obtained during the annual conferences has enabled them individually to save up to $400,000 a year by learning about new procedures and systems.
They also praised the convenience and savings available through the Association's clearinghouse service which facilitates the buying and selling of materials handling equipment.
