Swisslog acquires Munck Automation

Munck Automation Technology, Inc., the Newport News, Va.-based manufacturer of automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) and automatic guided vehicle systems (AGVS) has been acquired by Swisslog Management Ltd., headquartered in Aarau, Switzerland.The acquisition is expected to strengthen Swisslog's market presence in the U.S. and help it establish a foothold in selected key industries in the growing logistics market. Swisslog is a leading supplier of materials handling automation, including various types of conveying technology, warehouse management systems, AS/RS, AGVS, and robotic handling systems.
With Munck, the Swisslog Group of companies will have worldwide employment of nearly 2,000. Swisslog's six companies-Digitron AG in AArau, Switzerland; Accalong AB in Partille, Sweden; Schierholz GmbH in Bremen, Germany; Cimcorp Oy in Ulvila, Finland; Digitron Translift AG in Kriens, Switzerland; and Transnorm Systems, GmbH in Harsum, Germany-and subsidiaries had consolidated sales of $320 million in 1997 in 50 countries.
