Association site provides wealth of info

By Martha Spizziri -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/1998

Material Handling Industry Online is the umbrella site for these industry associations and groups: Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), Material Handling Institute (MHI), Materials Handling & Management Society (MHMS), Material Handling Education Foundation (MHEF), and the Association of Professional Material Handling Consultants (APMHC). To reach the site, go to www.mhia.org.

Information about the ProMat 99 trade show and conference is on the site. Click the ProMat logo in the main (right-hand) frame on the home page and you'll find links to online registration, travel information, a map of the exhibit hall, and more. There's information about educational sessions, but descriptions aren't yet available.

In the left-hand frame are text links to different portions of the site. Click one of the section names and that page appears in the main frame on the screen's right side.

The first organization listed is MHIA, a vendor association. MHIA's pages are of some interest for end users. MHIA's product and member directory lists equipment and service providers. Also available are descriptions of MHIA's equipment guides and other references. The literature can be ordered via phone or e-mail.

The section on the MHI features details on the College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CIC-MHE), which MHI sponsors. CIC-MHE prepares teaching materials and holds events that support material handling education and research.

The MHMS part of the online site is particularly useful to materials handling managers. MHMS' pages include information on correspondence courses and certification programs.

As for the other organizations, MHEF provides scholarships to students pursuing an education in material handling. APMHC offers an "Ask a Consultant" page, which lets users submit questions via an online form.
