Quality circles-alive and well!
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 9/1/1998
Quality circles, employee involvement teams, or any of the other names that these problem-solving teams go by- they're alive and well, according to QCI International, a training and consulting firm. Don Dewar, president of the firm, maintains that "properly functioning teams should have a savings-to-cost ratio of six-to-one." He says his team at Lockheed-Martin in Sunnyvale, Calif. in the 1970s achieved a 11-to-one ratio.Self-managed work teams are one of the recent manifestations of the quality circle concept-where the team strives for ideas that improve quality, up motivation and productivity, and increase profits.
QCI says that the quality circle concept has spread throughout the world, and in the U.S. it's unusual to find a company with 100 employees or more that's unfamiliar with the concept. Many don't bring the teams to full potential, however.
