By Mike Flamer -- Modern Materials Handling, 10/1/1998

Regardless of position, skill level or company, we all strive to improve our lot in life. Some of us look for more responsibility, or authority, or money. Some of us want a greater challenge from our work. Whatever our personal agendas, we all want a better and more rewarding life for ourselves and our families.

Many of us have the advantage of fine college educations. It is not unusual to find engineering degrees and MBAs sprinkled liberally among us-a tribute to the quality of people working in the Material Handling Industry. But, do you realize that your education becomes outdated? A rule of thumb dictates that after five years you should perform a thorough skills analysis on yourself and continue to assess your knowledge base every few years. Your job responsibilities may have gone beyond your education.

How do you keep your skills level sharp? One of the best ways is to enroll in continuing education courses offered by universities, local colleges, and professional societies.

This is where the Materials Handling & Management Society (MHMS) can help you be a more valuable employee and member of your company's team. The MHMS offers a wide variety of self-guided learning systems, as well as four outstanding correspondence courses that you can study at home. Additionally, technical papers from some of the world's best academicians are available from our website: www.mhia.org/mhms.

The MHMS is a division of the Material Handling Institute (MHI), which administers a large resource library featuring information about almost everything you need to know about Material Handling.

If you are a MHMS member, you have received a letter from MHI's Director of Training about three powerful professional development courses offered this fall by a leading Kentucky university. Their titles are: "The Basics of Material Handling: Concepting Solutions and Applications," "Introduction to Marketing to the U.S. Material Handling Industry," and "Value Added Sales Training for the Material Handling Industry." Couldn't you use a refresher course in these areas? For information on courses, call Trina Streater at MHI. Her number is 704-676-1190. Call today. It's never too early to learn.

Professional Activities is the official publication of the Materials Handling & Management Society. For more information on MHMS and membership, access the Society's home page on the World Wide Web http://www.mhia.org/mhms or contact Bobbie Curtis, Manager of MHMS Operations, by calling 704-676-1183. The address is 8720 Red Oak Blvd., Suite 201; Charlotte, NC 28217-3935
