Symbol CEO receives award
Symbol's Jerome Swartz receives IEEE award.

Dr. Jerome Swartz, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Symbol Technologies, Inc., was recently awarded the 1998 IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition award.Credited with more than 125 U.S. patents and technical publications, Swartz is a recognized expert in the allied engineering physics fields of laser systems and opto-electronics, with particular application to product development in bar code scanners and related hardware.
In 1974, Swartz co-managed the design and fabrication of a computer-automated camera for the manufacture of film masters necessary for the printing of the Universal Product Code (UPC) bar code. He then became involved in the production, marketing, and sales of film masters as president of UPC Film Masters, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of SBAR, which later changed its name to Symbol Technologies, Inc.
Swartz patented and led the development of the first hand-held laser scanner and the first scanner-integrated hand-held computer. Under his direction, Symbol pioneered the world's first spectrum wireless local area network.
