Lift truck fleet enhances operation

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 11/1/1998

By touring the Continental Deli Foods plant in Cherokee, Iowa, it's easy to see how much pride goes into everything Continental Deli does, from the prime selection of its meats, to the meticulous preparation and processing of all its fine quality foods.

High-performance lift trucks are essential to the process at Continental Deli. The company's lift trucks have to transport heavy 2,200-2,800 lb meat pallets from trailers and store them in 32 [insert degree sign here] F coolers. Lift trucks transfer meat through tight, small spaces, and over slippery floors and ramps.

In order to maintain and exceed the company's high productivity average of 132 million lb of meat processed a year, Continental Deli's drivers are required to meet daily quotas. Operators need a durable and reliable lift truck able to withstand the heavy work loads.

Continental Deli purchased a fleet of electric, stand-up counterbalanced lift trucks for the majority of its food handling and transportation needs.

Managers at Continental Deli noticed a significant difference in the reduced number of operator complaints and injury reports after using these lift trucks. Ergonomic and safety features include the multi-function control handle; low effort, electronic steering; low step height; and a padded wrap-around operator's compartment designed for driver support and comfort.

The travel and lift speeds of the trucks contribute to Continental Deli's longtime tradition of producing record amounts of processed meat. With travel speeds empty or loaded of up to 8 miles per hour, operators are able to move more product in less time, increasing productivity and surpassing plant quotas.

The truck's lift height of 190 in. makes working in Continental Deli's tight, three-high rack applications a breeze. The vehicle's 3,000 lb capacity easily handles the 2,200 lb meat vats and pallets.

Innovative features such as the three-wheel configuration, dual steer tires, and dual drive motors that enable the lift truck to turn on a dime have further improved Continental Deli's operation.
