Data capture by 2-D: a long-term look
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 11/1/1998
End uses around the world for two-dimensional (2-D) symbologies should grow as rapidly as 50% per year during the next five years, says a study by Venture Development Corporation (VDC), Natick, Mass. Global demand for 2-D symbology reading equipment and systems-both hand held and fixed position readers-rose to an estimated $90 million in 1997, and will reach $115 million this year (chart).Two-dimensional symbologies will find uses in a broad range of AIDC subsystems, along with systems for computing, control, and communication. The 2-D systems are expected to displace and complement linear bar codes and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, VDC says.
Even though the future looks rosy, 2-D suppliers must address a number of specific issues, including which symbols are commercially viable and in which applications, VDC says.
