Benchmarking distribution
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 12/1/1998
If you're a manager in food distribution you probably know that the 1998 Wholesale/Retail Distribution Center Benchmark Report contains a wealth of statistics on warehousing operations. Consider, for example, the chart (left) with data on how companies move products from the dock by forklift, pallet jacks, or other means. This report from Food Distributors International and the Food Marketing Institute also has data on forklift productivity: Most firms get between 16 and 20 letdowns/hour from their forklift operators. Some, however, achieve 30 letdowns/hour.
Data collection technologies are gaining in food distribution: 58% of the DCs use RF systems. When it comes to order selection, 85% of firms use the Z-pick method.
