Custom conveyor system cuts downtime, maintenance
A low maintenance, powered-roller conveyor is thematerials handling solution for Oakley Industries' tire and wheel assembly and delivery process.

Oakley Industries of Detroit, Mich., utilized two distinct materials handling systems in its tire assembly and delivery process. But one system was not adequate. For the automated production line, Oakley relied on a line-shaft conveyor. This system achieved specific throughput rates and Oakley's low-pressure accumulation requirements. Additionally, this conveyor met the safety and ergonomic needs of Oakley employees.
However, the chain-driven live roller system, initially installed in Oakley's truck trailers for tire loading/unloading, was costly in terms of equipment maintenance and downtime.
Not able to withstand the three-mile trek to its delivery destination, the chain-driven system frequently broke down- requiring continual parts replacement and repair. Obviously a better method was necessary.
Oakley contacted a conveyor supplier to determine whether the line-shaft technology used successfully in its assembly facility would also be applicable for the tire delivery system.
The conveyor supplier conducted a site visit of the operation. The supplier then concluded that line-shaft technology was not a viable alternative for the questioned application.
The supplier's engineering team drew upon industry experience and crafted a solution especially suited to the project's operational and environmental situation.
A tire handling conveyor solution was conceptualized using motorized rollers. The conveyor system now can twist as the trailer moves over elevation changes in its route. This flexibility is made possible through a special crossmember assembly which diffuses negative forces on the side frames and crossmember welds.
Installation and electrical wiring for these units is uncomplicated and easily modified. The streamline design of the new conveyor uses powered rollers, easing maintenance and reducing downtime for repair.
The new system offers safe, quiet, reliable, and flexible operation-at a rate of 14 tires per minute through the trailers. Each trailer delivers approximately 265 tires in first-in/first-out order.
While gaining functionality, reducing noise levels, and decreasing maintenance burdens, Oakley purchased their solution at a price almost 25% lower than that of conventional chain-driven equipment. Ermanco 616-798-4547.
