Making better supply chain decisions

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 12/1/1998

What are some of the key practices leading to successful supply chain management among manufacturers? First results from a multi-year statistical study indicate some answers. The study focused on use of the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model (see news, November 1998, pp. 20-21).

Three practices stood out: Using historical data for forecasting as well as applying mathematical models to predicting demand are both important in planning functions. And use of weekly planning cycles is vital for the manufacturing phase of SCOR modelling.

Complete Business Solutions, Inc. (CBSI) conducted the study for the Supply Chain Council. The discipline of integrated supply chain management, says CBSI Kevin McCormack, "is so new that decision makers must sift through a blizzard of often-conflicting terminology and advice to get at underlying truths." CBSI's study helps top execs assess their efforts using "best practices" from manufacturing peers. For more on the study call Kris Liebold at 248-848-2284.
