Mid-size manufacturers' plans, problems
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 12/1/1998
Forty-seven percent of mid-size manufacturers will build a new plant or relocate an existing one within five years. That's one finding from a Grant Thornton survey of companies with annual sales between $20 million and $500 million.Reasons to build or relocate include finding skilled employees (62%) and to be close to major customers (61%). With jobless rates low now, 65% of these companies say availability of highly skilled production workers is inadequate. Most (59%) say they can't find such employees.
The "Asian flu bug" hasn't bitten these companies too severely. They expect this economic crisis to last a few years. But none of the mid-size firms expect to pull out of Asian markets entirely. Most common responses: Wait-and-see attitude (40%) and plan cautiously (26%).
