New Year's resolution: Get web savvy
By Martha Spizziri -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/1999
If your resolution for 1999 is to use the Internet, we can help. In this column, we'll cover the basics on how to access a web site.First, we'll assume that you have access to the Internet, either at work or at home, via a service provider like America Online.
Next, you need browser software that lets you see web pages. The most popular are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. If you have Internet access at work, chances are you have a browser on your computer. Otherwise, you'll have to purchase the software (or ask your company to purchase it for you).
Once you have browser software installed and launched, what's next? Most browsers have a window at the top where you can type in the web site's address (also called a 'URL'-it stands for 'Uniform Resource Locator'). For the Modern Materials Handling site, the full URL is http://www.mmh.com. However, since all web page URLs start with 'http://,' recent browser programs let you leave that prefix out. Just type in the character string www.mmh.com in the window. Then hit 'Enter' or 'Return' , and you're in business. The browser will look for that site and display the page.
Now it's just a matter of finding information you want. Our site, like many, has a navigation bar on the left to help you find different sections. Click on 'News,' 'New Products,' or another link on the blue button bar. Alternatively, you can scroll down the main portion of the page. Click on any of the blue, underlined text (called 'hypertext' or a 'hyperlink') to read the story described. To get back to the main home page, hit the 'Back' button on your browser or the blue 'MMH Home' button that's always on the top left hand of the site.
Next month, this column will cover search engines and how to find information on the Internet. In the meantime, if you have questions about how to use the web, let me know. My phone, e-mail, and fax are below.
