Equipment consumption up and growing
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 1/1/1999
According to the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), the consumption of material handling equipment systems in the U.S. has grown to just over $60 billion per year. This consumption exists in nearly all process and service industry categories. A majority of those categories are in the construction, manufacturing, and service industries.Modest shipments growth in 1999 over 1998 is expected for the whole of the industry. Bookings during 1999 should be more favorable as growth builds over the next few years.
Other changes for 1999 as predicted by MHI include:
- A continued shift toward equipment vs. new plant capital spending
- Addition of productivity enhancing technology vs. investment in capacity
- Globalization of U.S. companies
- Concurrence with which goods and information are moved along the supply channels
As consumers demand variety, availability, convenience, quality, and affordability, market forces are driving logistical evolution throughout the supply chain.
As a result, efficient physical movement of merchandise from producer to consumer becomes a priority. Trading partnerships are developing to facilitate the fastest physical movement of materials and delivery of services at the lowest cost.
