Fifty years young!

For more information on a local event in your area, call the chapter officer listed above.

By Mike Flamer -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/1999

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting with Don Frazier, the founder of what is now Frazier Industrial Company. As you tour ProMat 99, you will most likely see Don in his cowboy outfit, strolling up and down the aisles.

Don started Frazier Industrial 50 years ago and soon after joined what was then known as the American Material Handling Society, New Jersey Chapter. Don has been a member of the AMHS, and all of its successors, including the Materials Handling & Management Society (MHMS), for 50 years!

Don feels that much of what he learned came from his membership within the Society. He also believes that too many sales personnel are not learning about all the different equipment types within the materials handling industry.

Which brings us to ProMat 99. As you cruise up and down the miles of show floor aisles and look at over 600 exhibits, the overwhelming variety of technology, equipment, and systems should clearly tell you that this is not your father's materials handling industry! Today's materials handling professional needs to know how sophisticated engineered systems work and fit together into a solution for the client and for the end user.

There is no better way of upgrading your knowledge (and giving a shot to your career potential) than getting involved with the MHMS. Today's Society offers a wide variety of correspondence courses, in-home study courses, technology updates, and research papers, either through our website or through the auspices of the Material Handling Institute.

Visit us at our booth (#C3235), or e-mail us (bcurtis@mhia.org/mhms) or look us up on our website (www.mhia. org/mhms). And if you really want to talk to someone, call our Executive Director, Bobbie Curtis, at 704-676-1183.

Take the advice of a 50 year veteran of the materials handling industry. Join your professional society and learn more about your industry.

MHMS Membership Meeting. MHMS management will kick off 1999 with our First Annual Membership Meeting held in conjunction with ProMat 99 at Mc-Cormick Place in Chicago. There will be a networking luncheon on Monday, February 8 coupled with a state of the society report and a keynote address by industry author and speaker, Jim Tompkins of Tompkins Associates.

Professional Activities is the official publication of the Materials Handling Management Society. For membership, access the Society's home page on the World Wide Web http://www.mhia.org/mhms or contact Bobbie Curtis, Executive Director of MHMS, by calling 704-676-1183. The address is 8720 Red Oak Blvd., Suite 201; Charlotte, NC 28217-3935, or circle no. 445.
