WERC on warehouse software, ERP
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/1999
Packaged warehouse management software (WMS) is a "flourishing" market, says a report from the Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC). There's also "a movement away from custom warehouse systems," according to the 42-page study, "Warehouse Systems and the Supply Chain."Research done by Andersen Consulting for WERC reveals that Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) "quite simply are not providing the required functionality for most of today's more complex distribution operations."
Vendor compliance programs and custom labeling are in place at 70% of operations surveyed. "Clearly, today's facility is much more than just a storehouse," the WERC study concludes.
Based on its research with 200 warehouse and IT managers the report offers guidelines on WMS implementation in a section entitled, "Making it Work."
Distributed to WERC's membership, copies of the report are available for $15 plus $4 s&h to WERC members, $30 plus $4 for nonmembers. Call 630-990-0001.
