Tape dispensers provide flexibility, security for furniture giant

Modular computer desk parts are heavy. That's why Steelcase, Inc., an industry leader in office furniture, uses strong-as-steel packaging and sealing methods to get its heavy equipment delivered without damage. The reinforced gummed tape that Steelcase uses affords the company security, flexibility, and environmental responsibility.
But it was the cutting of the tape that offered a challenge to Steelcase.
"Other machines we tried would short feed," says Rick Anthony, senior packaging engineer for Steelcase. "The knives wouldn't stay sharp."
Steelcase found dispensers that can handle the reinforced tape. "The machines we use now are durable, and if something does happen to them, they can be repaired instead of replaced," says Anthony.
As desk parts roll off production lines, they are stacked on platforms and delivered to one of three packing lines. Each packing line has from three to eight stations. Each station has one or two electric dispensers for packers to use.
The electric dispensers feature top-heating units that draw water into the gummed tape and multiple moistening brushes that provide full wetting coverage on the tape. This process creates superior adhesion to the corrugated cardboard.
The rapid-fire action of the electronic dispensers allows packers to distribute long strips or short pieces of tape in only seconds.
