WMS and the Web: Just a matter of time
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 2/1/1999
Most people think of a warehouse management system (WMS) as working only within the four walls of the warehouse. And that's fine. But wouldn't it be better if a WMS had a view inside your suppliers' and customers' four walls too?Although such a product doesn't yet exist, Luda Kopeikina, CEO and president of Celerity Solutions, says the wait won't be long. She even has a name for it-real-time exchange.
In an exclusive interview with Modern Materials Handling, Kopeikina explained the concept. She envisions a business-to-business real-time trading exchange. It would match demand with supply for goods, services, and transportation. And all of the information would move over the Web.
A client-server engine running the software would be linked to the Internet. It would have access to data about inventory in the warehouse and know what could be promised to any customer in whatever time frame. Meanwhile, there would be a purchasing module at one end and a sales order-taking capability on the other. But the real trick, says Kopeikina, is doing it all in real time to meet short customer response times.
