Allred, Michaels win MHIA Education Foundation awards

Two outstanding service awards sponsored by the Material Handling Education Foundation were recently announced by William Sbordon, publisher emeritus of Modern Materials Handling at the Annual Foundation Gala.James K. Allred, president of Eskay Corp., received the Reed-Apple award for his record of contributions to formal material handling education programs in an extraordinary way and to an extraordinary degree.
The Reed-Apple award was established in 1981 as a permanent tribute to Drs. Ruddell Reed, Jr., and James M. Apple, renowned material handling educators and innovators.
William R. Michaels, chairman of Pinnacle Automation Corp., was presented with the Norman L. Cahners Award for recognition of distinguished activities in the material handling field and in support of the mission of the Education Foundation. The award was established in 1990 and is named in honor of the founder of Modern Materials Handling magazine.
To receive his recognition, Allred has distinguished himself with more than 35 years in the materials handling industry, working and educating on three continents. He holds several patents and is a pioneer in the materials handling industry literally inventing the term automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). Most recently, he delivered the keynote speech last month at the materials handling show ProMat 99.
Michaels was awarded the Cahners award for unflagging dedication to and promotion of the Education Foundation. Michaels has long led the industry with promotion of the Foundation's programming by sponsoring special events and activities in his company's booths at various trade shows.
In addition, Michaels is a long-time member of the Foundation's Board of Directors.
Through scholarships and various educational programs, the Material Handling Education Foundation actively promotes continuing education in the materials handling field.
