Lift trucks assist damaged mezzanine manufacturer
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 3/1/1999
Wildeck Mezzanines Inc., in Waukesha, Wisc. suffered extensive damage of $1 million when a storm devastated the company's painting operation-putting the company out of production, and idling 60 employees."The paint and finish department was totally inoperable," says J.D. Mitchell, purchasing/ traffic manager for Industrial Heat Enterprises International Corp. (IHEI), the company that installed Wildeck's paint finishing system a year before the storm. "The roof was completely peeled off, the conveyor system torn up, and the electrical wires were pulled through the conduit pipe and out of the control panel."
"Wildeck has built its reputation on fast delivery of its mezzanines," says Mitchell. "For them, an out-of-production condition of any length would have a serious impact on existing and future business."
After surveying the damage, IHEI estimated that it would take at least six weeks to repair the damaged painting system and have it running at full capacity. But that time allotment was not acceptable for Wildeck.
With good planning, extended work shifts, and luck, Mitchell and the IHEI team re-evaluated that the operation could be running in about two weeks. Mitchell called vendors, explained the situation, and asked for their help.
Wisconsin Industrial Truck Company, (WITCO) a Daewoo lift truck dealer, delivered two 6,000 capacity pneumatic tire lift trucks the same day.
By working extended shifts and weekends, and with the help of key vendors, IHEI completed the Wildeck job in less than two weeks.
