Will the Y2K bug bite?

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 3/1/1999

If your process equipment has embedded logic, you're at risk of Y2K, or year 2000 bug. Factory Mutual's RECORD magazine (volume 75, #4) explores computer chips with embedded logic that control processes and how they might or might not create Y2K problems. Go to www.factorymutual.com for details.

The property conservation organization-with its years of expertise in fire sprinkler technology-also advises that most sprinkler systems rely upon mechanical devices, not microprocessors. Heat results in the device fusing or rupturing, releasing fire suppressing water. So a date change to the year 2000 has little bearing upon sprinkler activation, contrary to what has been said.
