ProMat 99 sets record

ProMat 99 was bigger than ever this time around. Here are a few highlights from the show.

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/1999

Over 42,000 industry professionals attended ProMat 99 in Chicago this past February. Exhibitors and attendees from all over the U.S. and nearly 80 countries participated in the materials handling industry's premier trade event.

"This is the largest material handling exhibition ever held in the United States," said A.L. Leffler, MHIA's chief executive officer, at the onset of the show.

Attendance this year increased 7% from ProMat 97. More than 650 exhibits covered over 290,000 sq ft--a 12% and 15% increase, respectively, over ProMat 97.

A wide variety of products were introduced at the show.

Redesigned rack systems, robotic picking systems, and a hydraulic dock leveler that facilitates loading and unloading of high-cube "low boy" trailers are only a few of the many products that were on the ProMat show floor. A new forklift was unveiled--a forklift that received a lot of attention mainly for its wheel construction (see related news story p. 20).

Another product that made its debut was a conveyor that allows for the creation of any layout, because each piece of the conveyor is built as a complete modular unit with its own protocol logic controller. Our coverage of these products and others at the show begins on page 125.

Now that ProMat 99 is over, The Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) has shifted its sights to NA 2000 (The North American Material Handling Show and Forum). MHIA will sponsor NA 2000 scheduled for April 10-13, 2000 at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Mich.

At the NA 2000 exhibit spacedraw held at ProMat 99, over 115,000 sq ft of exhibit space was selected by 215 exhibitors-a 20% increase in square feet reserved over the NA 98 spacedraw. The average booth size selected was 545 sq ft, a 20% increase in average booth size.

Exhibitors or persons interested in attending NA 2000 can contact MHIA at 704-676-1190 or visit www.mhia.org.

NEWS BRIEFSThe Industrial Truck Association (ITA) will hold its Spring meeting April 12-14, 1999 in Washington, DC. Call the ITA office at 202-296-9880 for more information.
