Beginning in June, materials handling practitioners who demonstrate a sound understanding of the fundamentals of materials handling, including basic equipment knowledge, can become a certified associate in materials handling through the Material Handling and Management Society (MHMS).The new program, designed by Howard Zollinger, vice president of certification and education of MHMS, is considered a stepping stone to the society's professional certification.
"Consultants tell us they can find experts on just racks or shelving or forklifts," says A.L. Leffler, chief executive officer of the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA). "But few people understand complete systems."
Expanded certification is just one of the new offerings by MHMS since its merger with the Material Handling Institute. Since then, says Bobbie Curtis, executive director, membership in the society has increased by 112%.
Much of that growth can be attributed to the new "virtual society" concept developed in conjunction with the MHMS Web site (www.mhia.org/mhms).
The site includes a "members only" path to an online library drawn from the society's library. Last year, 39% of the increase in new membership was a direct result of the Web site.
