This $60 billion industry has room to grow

MHIA's A.L. Leffler

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/1999

Almost 92% of the materials handling system market is untapped, according to MHIA's Leffler.

Materials handling hardware and software sales is a strong $60 billion industry that is expected to grow, according to A.L. Leffler, CEO of the Material Handling Industry of America.

"Suppliers have started to think differently. They are moving from looking at themselves as being manufacturers to being providers of materials handling solutions," said Leffler at a ProMat press conference.

According to Leffler, only about 8% of all U.S. companies have ventured forth with a full materials handling system. The rest have focused on cells, or smaller parts of a whole system. This means that the remaining 92% of the market for materials handling system solutions is virtually untapped.

Leffler expects materials handling automation to play an increasingly important role in these system solutions.

"Materials handling companies need to keep an eye on the need for being productivity suppliers in the future," added Leffler.
