Home shopping gets easier

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 4/1/1999

The British are starting to do their grocery shopping from the comfort of their easy chairs.

Two grocery chains in England are offering customers this alternative to conventional shopping.

Customers are given a Palm Pilot hand-held personal organizer that can be synchronized with a laptop or PC and special software. When the last of a customer's particular grocery item is gone, the bar code on the product can be scanned at the customer's home. The Palm Pilot connects to a PC or laptop, and when the information is downloaded into the computer, it is then sent directly to the grocery store's Web site by way of the Internet.

Orders sent over the Internet are sorted by aisles when they arrive at the grocery store. Pickers using carts with touch-pad scanners collect the groceries which are then delivered to homes.

One grocery chain will charge a flat fee of 5 pounds for delivery. The other will operate the system under its collect and go scheme where shoppers pick up their groceries.
