Positive productivity picture for manufacturers
By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 5/1/1999
Manufacturing productivity has grown 3.7% a year since 1990, and went up 4.8% during the past three years, says National Association of Manufacturers president Jerry Jasinowski. "Productivity has been the locomotive of manufacturing growth throughout the decade," he adds, discounting views that the manufacturing sector is in decline. Such reports, he says, "are plain wrong."From a pricing perspective, the picture isn't quite so rosy. U.S. manufacturing currently is "two-tiered," according to the NAM executive. High-tech industries, such as computers, industrial machinery, and semiconductors have done well since mid-1997, as have finished goods like household appliances. But commodities, such as metals and petroleum, have been hit by price declines.
