Industry adopts standards

By Staff -- Modern Materials Handling, 7/1/1999

The Industrial Metal Containers (IMC) organization is strengthening its emphasis upon safety of product designs by requiring that all present and future members must adhere to ANSI MH 26.1 and 26.2 standards as a condition of membership.

ANSI MH 26.1 is currently in review by IMC. The 2000 version will be available in the future. The requirements of MH 26.1 were established to provide guidelines for engineering, design, and construction procedures for safe use of industrial metal containers.

The standard applies to welded-wire containers and to corrugated and non-corrugated steel containers. It specifically affects their use for the storage and movement of goods and materials through various interplant and intraplant material handling systems and automated handling systems.

The objective of ANSI MH 26.2 is to provide a guideline for the design, testing, and utilization of welded-wire mesh rack decking. This standard applies to uniformly loaded decking fabricated from welded-wire mesh, with or without permanently attached reinforcements, for use in storage racks. Such rack decking provides capability by creating a surface, in conjunction with a superstructure of framework (rack), for materials that are palletized or in containers.

The MH 26.1 and 26.2 committee of Material Handling Industry is comprised of a portion of the major companies that design and manufacture welded-wire decking in the U.S. The standards were formulated using American National Standards Institute procedures.

In addition to its standards work, the Industrial Metal Containers recently announced the expansion of the name of the organization to Industrial Metal Containers & Wire Decking (IMC & WD). This expansion is designed to broaden the focus and vision of the IMC & WD organization

IMC & WD is a product section of the Material Handling Industry. The organization was created by a group of leading manufacturers who design, fabricate, and install industrial metal containers. Member companies represent industry leaders in the industrial metal containers and wire-decking market.

ANSI MH 26.1 and 26.2 are available for purchase through the Material Handling Industry literature department. To order call 704-676-1190.
