Shop 'til you drop!
By Martha Spizziri -- Modern Materials Handling, 7/1/1999
Now there's an Amazon.com for industry. It's called the IndustryStore, and it's operated by Modern Materials Handling's parent company, Cahners Business Information. The IndustryStore carries more than 25,000 books on manufacturing, warehousing, plant operations, and related subjects. As with Amazon and similar sites, most books are sold at a discount. But IndustryStore provides expertise that most mainstream bookstores can't: It features reviews of many titles by editors of Cahners publications. There's a new review every Monday.
You can search for books by keyword or browse different categories such as Manufacturing, Quality Control, and Industrial Technology. Online transactions are handled via industry-standard secure server software. Most orders are delivered within five to seven days. To visit, go to www.mmh.com and click on the IndustryStore link.
Search engine update
In my February column ("Looking for a few good sites," February 1999, page 27), I discussed "mega" sites that let users look up information on several major search engines at once. Since then, I've learned of three more such sites:
- Mamma (www.mamma.com), billed as "the mother of all search engines," lets you search for web pages, news, and stock quotes.
- ProFusion (www.profusion.com) provides four options: the best three engines based on your topic; use the three fastest engines; use all nine of its search engines; and choose which engines you want to use.
- SavvySearch (www.savvysearch.com) claims to scour more than 200 search engines, guides, auctions, storefronts, Usenet archives, news archives, libraries, and other web resources. It also lets you set up your own custom query page that can include up to 100 of those resources.
