Six manufacturers prized for excellence

Six manufacturers walked away with a 1999 Shingo Prize for excellence in manufacturing at the Shingo Prize conference in Columbus, OH in late June."The National Association of Manufacturers is extremely proud to sponsor the Shingo Prize program so we can showcase the key role that manufacturing plays in the global economy and celebrate the tremendous strides manufacturers are making in quality, productivity, and efficiency," says National Association of Manufacturing (NAM) chairman Calvin Campbell.
The prestigious Shingo Prize is awarded to companies in North America that demonstrate outstanding achievement in manufacturing processes, with emphasis on lean, just-in-time production. The prize is co-sponsored by NAM and administered by the college of business at Utah State University. It is named for the late Shigeo Shingo, creator of the original Toyota production system. This is the tenth year the Shingo Prize has been awarded.
The winners include:
The Wiremold Company-Since the implementation of its new production system in 1990, productivity has more than doubled and quality audits without a defect were at 99.4% in 1998. Top manufacturing companies throughout the world have visited the West Hartford, CT plant to observe the Wiremold system in action.
Delphi Automotive Systems-The company's RIMIR operations plant in Matamoras, Mexico manufacturers driver and passenger-side airbags. Delphi has achieved 100% on-time delivery for service parts and airbags while increasing productivity by 12%.
Federal Mogul Lighting Products-This company's facility in Hampton, Va. reduced order-to-ship times by 83%, reduced defects to 25 parts per million, and improved first-pass yield to 97%.
O.C. Tanner-In Salt Lake City, Utah O.C. Tanner produces more than four million corporate employee service awards and ships 10,000 awards per day. The plant increased on-time delivery 44% increased first-pass yield by 17% since 1993, and reduced scrap by 69% in the last two years.
The other two prizes were awarded to Mexican based companies. Grupo Cydsa Sales del Istmo, S.A. de C.V. manufactures and distributes salt products. By implementing principles of continuous improvement, the plant has maintained its market dominance, reduced operating costs, and improved quality and customer service.
Spicer Cardanes, S.A. de C.V. produces and commercializes light and heavy-duty driveshafts in the Mexican domestic market. Since 1995 the plant has increased productivity 78%, raised return-on-investment 400%, and improved operating margin by more than 230%.
